Solar powered security lights and shed lights consist basically of a short stand on which the bulb itself can be angled vertically. Around the base, a motion detector can be adjusted horizontally to cover the area facing it. Within a certain adjustable radius in the sensitivity range of the detector, any movement will light up the bulb for several minutes.
The power source is a solar panel which may be attached to the roof or similarly rested on the ground. A solar powered security light comes equipped with batteries for power storage. Battery life lasts two years on average. The latest technology utilizes LED (light emitting diode) bulbs for today's solar lights. These can last from eight up to ten years.
The Maxsa Solar 80 LED Security Floodlight is a solar powered security light equipped with a bulb that can be adjusted vertically. The infra-red movement detector can be swiveled over 180 degrees. It senses movement up to a radius of 40 feet. The bulb itself is an 80 LEDs that can outlast the life of the gadget itself. The brightness of the light is comparable to a 40 watt halogen bulb. Easy to install, the light and solar panel both come with fittings for screws if they need to be attached to some surface. It can be set to light up for 2 minutes maximum upon detection of movement. The movement sensor is sensitive. However, the solar pad of this product requires direct sun exposure to work at its best.
The Concept SL-100 32 LED Solar Security Light is much along the same line as the Maxsa solar powered security lights, even looks quite similar to it. It costs a little less and does a pretty good job of lighting the area it is installed in. It can go up to 10 hours if fully charged. Although the light has a three minute setting, it will stay on constantly for as long as the photo-cell light sensor detects the object. Like the Maxsa it may be installed as a single piece or, the solar panel, separately from the light.
The Smart Solar 3170WRM1 Solar Motion Security Light, apart from its rather flimsy plastic casing, performs well. It features dual bulbs of 5 LEDs each for a total of 10 LEDs. The heads can be moved up or down and from side to side. A passive infra-red motion sensor lights upon detecting a movement. The brightness is more than efficient for the size of the bulbs. The solar panels are very effective in collecting power and this product provides reasonable lighting even on cloudy days.
The Maxsa Solar Motion - Act Wedge Light has an interesting shape for charging and lighting. It has an infra-red motion sensor capable of detection within 100 degrees and 22 feet away. It turns on upon detecting movement and remains lit for about a minute. This solar powered security light provides a softer lighting at a relatively inexpensive price.
The Designers Edge L-949 10 LED Rechargeable Solar Panel Shed Light Model is a well-priced solar light for a shed or a garage. It does not have the brightness of more expensive lights but has its useful place among solar lights.
