A solar pool heater is used to warm the water in your swimming pool. If you already have a heated pool, you can reduce your energy costs by adding a solar heater and therefore reducing the time your thermostatically controlled heater will "kick in". And if you have an unheated pool, a solar powered pool heater is an inexpensive way to warm your pool and make the swimming season last longer.
Solar pool heaters work by taking the rays of the sun, a totally renewable and environmentally safe form of energy, and using that heat to warm your water. They work in two different manners, each of which has advantages and disadvantages. Your pool usage will determine which type of solar heaters is right for you.
The first type of solar swimming pool heater is a solar panel kit using your pool pump to circulate water through the heater. The solar panels heat the water as it moves through the system and is then returned to the pool. These pool heaters work essentially the same way as a solar hot water heater. They are designed for a specific volume of water, so you should buy one that is sized for your pool.
An example of such a system is the Sunheater Above Ground Pool Solar Heating System. The system circulates the water, using the pool pump, to heat it and then pass it back into the pool. It is composed of solar panels that can raise the water temperature by as much as 10 degrees. While this solar heater system is designed for above-ground pools, there are also in-ground models available.
The second type of solar heater is a solar pool blanket that lays over the water. A typical example would be the popularsolar blanket for round above pools 15/16ft. The solar blanket absorbs the sunlight and transfers the heat to the water below. These are sometimes referred to as solar pool covers. They are available for in-ground and above-ground pools. Be sure to buy the cover for the right type of pool you have. Also check the rating, since solar pool blankets are designed to cover specific areas. If you find one that you like but the area is too small, you might need to purchase more than one unit.
Some solar blankets are designed for use only during swimming season. Putting them away for the winter is a drag. There is now a Solar Blanket Winter Coverthat will protect you solar blanket from the winter elements and ultraviolet rays that can damage its efficiency. Avalable in 16', 18', and 20' widths, this cover wraps around your solar pool heater blanket when it is on the reel and secures with Velcro.
Almost a blanket, but different in nature, is the Liquid Solar Blanket. This type of product, sold in the shape of a fish or seahorse, dispenses a non-toxic chemical (safe for swimmers) which forms an invisible film on the surface of the pool, therefore locking in the heat. The chemical also reduces evaporation and does not affect the chemical balance of the pool.
A similar product is the Liquid Solar Blanket Pill. This unit also retards evaporation and heat loss through a non-toxic chemical layer, but this solar pool heater is placed in the pool skimmer and is effective for up to 30,000 gallons.
A solar pool heater is an easy introduction to "going green". Relatively inexpensive, a solar pool heater can reduce your energy costs while increasing your enjoyment of your pool.
